I don’t get it! If Americans are the smartest on earth, how would they let the republican party as a party of choice?

Ever since, I got off the boat from Iran to the US back in 1985, I have only heard numerous stupid comments from the republican parties including the recent controversial rape remark by Republican Senate candidate, Todd Akin : http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/20/politics/campaign-wrap/index.html?hpt=hp_t1 .

I have also found the American people the smartest compare to the other nations. Here is the $ m question: If Americans are so smart....

a) How do they let these moron senators to take power and represent them

b) Granted, we are a democracy nation. Fine! But given, we know they will say something VERY STUPID at some point, shouldn’t they at least not boasting about them?
