Do you believe that social media will result in the convergence of other forms of communication, melding advertising, PR and Marketing functions into single units? If so, how soon? If not, why not?

Yes. We are already seeing it. Look at what CENTURY 21 did this year in mobile gaming: http://www.forbes.com/sites/johngaudiosi/2011/04/12/century-21-sold-on-ngmocos-mobile-game-we-city/ There is a lot of talk about owning the third screen (i.e., television, computer and smart phone/tablet) but in my opinion all content is moving toward one screen. In fact, I just heard that Apple plans to make a television. So, in terms of communication, advertising, pr and marketing, yes, convergence is definitely on the fast track.

Bob Matt, you're writing about "convergence," which is a related but different topic. My interest is hearing from folks whether or not there will continue to be separate silos for advertising, marketing and PR both at the corporate and the agency level. My hunch is that there will not be separate functions because social media is becoming a "glue" that will stick these pieces together permanently. It may even suck "customer service" into the vortex and it isn't beyond the imagination to see "human resources" caught up in it too.
